Patrick Tuttofuoco con Within Without è riuscito a riassumere in un’unica opera la dimensione dello spazio sconfinato, dell’universo e quella intima e personale.
L’artista mette in scena un gioco di contrapposizioni tra ciò che è infinitamente lontano da noi e ciò che ci è vicino, ciò che rappresenta il nostro spazio privato e domestico; ci fa toccare il suolo di Marte scelto quale sfondo di gioiellerie, tradotte in versione extra large, realizzate dalla nonna, infilatrice di perle nella Milano dei primi Novecento, ritrovate dall’artista in un cofanetto.
Le collane si stagliano imponenti sul suolo extraterrestre e scandiscono lo spazio verticalmente con forme, riflessi di luce e colore. Un pugno di fili d’oro e pietre levigate dal tempo simboleggiano la vicinanza affettiva, il calore della famiglia e ci fanno sentire “a casa”.
Come ha ben spiegato l’artista, CARTEdition si differenzia da altre iniziative artistiche e creative legate al wallcovering perchè agli artisti in questa occasione sono stati invitati a produrre una vera e propria opera d’arte. In quanto opera d’arte ha innescato un processo creativo e di costruzione di senso che appartiene alla dimensione prettamente culturale e concettuale a favore all’armonia formale d’insieme piuttosto che al dettaglio preciso e funzionale. CARTEdition risponde quindi in prima istanza al linguaggio dell’arte, ciò non toglie che funziona propriamente come una carta da parati.
Sono emozionato e cerco di trovare le sinergie possibili perché le cose si esprimano nella loro purezza in contesti diversi. Credo che sia un meccanismo di crescita ed evoluzione che riesce ad informare tutti i mondi che attraversa.
“Within without” – dento fuori – può essere definito anche il processo di trasformazione che ha avuto l’opera negli anni. Realizzato nel 2019 in versione site specific, per CARTEdition ora evolve per inserirsi con armonia in ogni contesto. La traduzione di un’opera da site specific non è impresa facile e non sempre fattibile, implica un solido equilibrio interno all’opera e una risposta a logiche estetico formali universali. E’ proprio l’abilità di Patrick Tuttofuoco, abituato a rapportarsi con lo spazio, sia esso pubblico, museale, domestico, ad aver ripensato il progetto scegliendone soltanto alcuni elementi e ricostruendone l’immagine puntando alla massima rispondenza delle sue parti.
Sono sempre molto felice di confrontarmi con contesti diversi che mi costringano a vedere il mio lavoro da un punto di vista nuovo ..in questo progetto, sia nella prima versione che nella seconda, ho dovuto trasformare alcuni aspetti della mia pratica per incontrare un formato e una fruizione decisamente nuove.
CARTEditon può essere letto anche come un progetto di arte e impresa. L’arte e l’artista che si confrontano con il mondo della produzione. Diverse ad oggi le collaborazioni di Tuttofuoco con il mondo della produzione industriale e del prodotto.
L’Arte e l’impresa sono due espressioni diverse della natura umana, quello che mi interessa di più è la possibilità di scoprire tutte le linee di forza che le collegano generando un nuovo campo espressivo. Questo credo sia un processo luminoso e molto delicato.

With Within Without, Patrick Tuttofuoco has succeeded in combining the cosmic and personal dimensions in a single work.
The artist stages a game of juxtapositions between what is infinitely distant from us and what is close to us, what represents our private, intimate and domestic space. Patrick Tuttofuoco makes us ideally touch the ground of Mars, chosen as the background against which we can see some jewellery made by his grandmother, a stringer of pearl in early twentieth-century Milan, found by chance in a jewellery box.
The necklaces stand out imposingly against the extraterrestrial ground and mark the space vertically with shapes, reflections of light and colour. A handful of golden threads and stones polished by time symbolise intimacy, emotional closeness, the warmth of family and make us feel “at home”.
As the artist has explained so clearly, CARTEdition differs from other artistic and creative initiatives related to wallcovering because on this occasion the artists were invited to produce a real work of art. As a work of art, it has triggered a creative process and the construction of meaning that belongs to the purely cultural and conceptual dimension, favouring formal overall harmony rather than precise and functional detail. Therefore, although CARTEdition responds in the first instance to the language of art, the fact remains that, as a wallpaper, it is able to align itself with the demands of both aesthetics and habitation.
I’m excited and I try to find possible synergies so that things can be expressed in their purity in different contexts. I believe it is a mechanism of growth and evolution that manages to inform all the worlds through which it travels.
“Within without” – inside out – can also be defined as the process of transformation the work has undergone over the years. Made in 2019 as a site-specific version, for CARTEdition it now evolves to fit harmoniously into any context.
Translating a work from site-specific is not an easy undertaking and not always feasible, it implies a solid balance within the work itself and a response to universal aesthetic and formal logics. It is the skill of Patrick Tuttofuoco, who is accustomed to dealing with space, whether it be public, museum or domestic, that has led him to rethink the project, choosing only a few elements and reconstructing the image by aiming for the maximum correspondence between its parts.
I am always very happy to be confronted with different contexts which force me to see my work from a new point of view… in this project, in both the first and second versions, I had to transform some aspects of my practice in order to meet a decidedly new format and function.
CARTEditon can be read as both an art and a business project. Art and the artist coming face-to-face with the world of production. To date, Tuttofuoco’s collaborations with the world of industrial production and products have been varied.
Art and business are two different expressions of human nature, what interests me most is the possibility of discovering all the lines of force that connect them, generating a new expressive field. I think this is a very delicate and luminous process.
