Arrivati a metà del viaggio che racconta la collezione Wall&decò with CARTEdition by AtemporaryStudio presentiamo Now What? di Francesco Simeti. 

Per Francesco Simeti la carta da parati — così come la ricerca su altri materiali cari al design e al craft quali tessuti, ceramica, vetro — diventa una cifra stilistica che estende la sua visione fra progetti unici, opere pubbliche e lavori a tiratura illimitata come CARTEdition. 

 

 

La storia di Now What? parte da Trento, per un invito alla realizzazione di un intervento site specific all’interno di Casa Trentini – Atemporary Art Apartments. “..da qui la scelta della vegetazione alpestre” spiega l’artista “Da subito mi ha interessato molto il fatto che, grazie a CARTEdition e la collaborazione con Wall&decò, il progetto potesse poi prendere una sua strada autonoma e diventare disponibile ad un pubblico più ampio, aspetto che trovo particolarmente importante e democratico.”

Now What? ci fa immergere in un paesaggio fantastico in cui piante e fiori avvolgono lo spazio in un tripudio di vegetazione dall’aspetto invitante ma che nasconde delle anomalie.  Estrapolati da vecchi libri di fiori di montagna gli elementi naturali sono riproposti sovradimensionati, ingigantiti al punto da trasformare un possibile giardino in una giungla irreale.

 

 

Dietro alla bellezza apparente appaiono occhi preoccupati. Sono gli occhi del mondo animale che impaurito guarda il nostro agire nei confronti della natura, occhi che si confondono con la vegetazione, ombre nell’oscurità che ci ricordano le nostre responsabilità e che non siamo soli. Now What? è un monito che la natura ci invia rinforzato dal virgolettato dell’artista ad accompagnamento del progetto:

Nell’opera di Francesco Simeti un suadente senso estetico nasconde una lettura più profonda, più cruda, un segnale di allarme alla nostra società verso la devastazione ambientale e sociale che stiamo procurando e che mascheriamo dietro a false apparenze. Un messaggio nascosto che bisogna cercare con attenzione e che ci invita a non fermarsi in superficie.

Gli artisti evidenziano frazioni della storia che stiamo attraversando in modo profondo e non didascalico mentre l’arte, nella sua versione più libera e incondizionata, tende a condurci in un percorso di analisi e consapevolezza che presuppone apertura e ascolto da parte nostra, fruitori non solo d’arte ma di un mondo impalpabile in continuo cambiamento.

 

 

La realizzazione di opere di arte pubblica è stata sin dall’inizio un aspetto fondamentale della mia  pratica artistica e l’idea che l’arte sia liberamente e direttamente fruibile dal pubblico ne è forse il canone. Lavorare con la carta da parati e dare la possibilità al pubblico di portarsi l’arte a casa mi sembra sia un’estensione diretta e automatica di questa pratica.

We’ve arrived at the halfway point the journey recounting the collection Wall&decò with CARTEdition by AtemporaryStudio; we present Now What? by Francesco Simeti.

For Francesco Simeti wallpaper — alongside his research into other materials dear to design and craft such as fabrics, ceramics, glass — becomes a stylistic code that extends his vision amongst unique projects, public works and works with an unlimited edition such as CARTEdition.

 The story of Now What? began at Trento, with an invitation to create a site-specific work within Casa Trentini – Atemporary Art Apartments. “.. hence the choice of alpine vegetation” the artist explains “I was immediately interested in the fact that, thanks to CARTEdition and the collaboration with Wall&decò, the project could then take its own path and become available to a wider audience, an aspect that I find particularly important and democratic.”

Now What? immerses us in a fantastic landscape in which plants and flowers envelop the space in a riot of greenery with an inviting appearance but hiding anomalies.  Extrapolated from old books of mountain flowers, the natural elements come back in huge dimensions, magnified to the point of transforming a possible garden into an unreal jungle.

Behind the apparent beauty, worried eyes appear. They are the eyes of the animal world that fearfully looks at our actions towards nature, eyes that mingle with the vegetation, shadows in the darkness that remind us of our responsibilities and that we are not alone. Now What? is a warning from nature, reinforced by the artist’s quotation marks accompanying the project:

In Francesco Simeti’s work, a persuasive aesthetic sense hides a deeper, more raw reading, an alarm-bell to our society about the environmental and social devastation we are causing and which we hide behind false appearances. A hidden message that we must look for carefully and that invites us to look beyond the surface.

 Artists highlight parts of the history that we’re passing through in a profound and non-didactic way while art, in its freest and most unconditional version, tends to lead us on a path of analysis and awareness that presupposes openness and listening on our part, consumers not only of art but of an intangible world in constant change.

 

The creation of works of public art has been a fundamental aspect of my artistic practice right from the start and the idea that art is freely and directly accessible to the public is perhaps its canon. Working with wallpaper and giving the public the opportunity to bring the art home seems to me to be a direct and automatic extension of this practice.

It was born with the desire to bring the vision of artists into our homes, offices, places or non-places, public or private.
