ovvero sulla piattaforma mondiale di moda contemporanea NJAL – Not just a label. 

 

Giovanissima, controcorrente e audace.
Dopo un percorso di studi internazionali, in poco tempo conquista le pagine di Vogue e Vanity Fair, mixando creatività, riciclo, qualità, natura e libertà.

 

Gli abiti di Romina Dorigo, che sembrano essere veri e propri pezzi unici, non hanno bisogno di ulteriori presentazioni.

Capi eloquenti, volumi importanti, antichi pizzi, vecchi merletti e stratificazioni, che mi fanno pensare ad un incontro tra Velázquez e Margiela.
Il tutto ricamato con cura e sostenibilità.

 

A cosa o a chi ti ispiri quando crei?

Caravaggio, Brueghel, Pina Bausch, Azuma Makoto,Joel Peter Witkin, Dennis Oppenheim, Duy Anh Nhan Duc and Peter Greenaway – ma sono solo alcuni dei nomi.

 

La XIX edizione del Festival Maravee ti ha scelta quest’anno, assieme alla stilista slovena Matea Benedetti per rappresentare Maravee Dress.
Entrambe avete interpretato il “concetto di abito come entità che non si limita ad avvolgere il corpo, ma pretende di possederne il centro, incidendo tra corpo – mente – società, e sull’Ambiente, che viene affrontato in chiave ecologica attraverso il riciclo…”

Come e perché ti sei avvicinata all’upcycling – il riutilizzo creativo come processo di trasformazione di materiali di scarto in prodotti di qualità e valore ambientale
e quale era la precedente vita dei materiali riutilizzati?

Tutto quello che utilizzo mi è stato donato. Nella sfilata di Vancouver facevo camminare i miei modelli con sullo sfondo un video con battiti di ciglia di persone diverse alle quali avevo chiesto di indicarmi, appunto con un battito, quanto ci mettessero a stabilire se una cosa era bella o non lo era più.

Quello che volevo comunicare era la tempistica nella decisione, usando come metro di misura il battito di ciglia, un istante.
Un istante per capire che quella cosa non aveva più valore.

Le stesse cose che io portavo davanti ad un pubblico pagante e disposto a pagarle solo perché avevano un aspetto diverso o forse irriconoscibile.
Questo è quello che cerco di fare ogni volta che lavoro con questi abiti donati, portarli su un palco e ri-donargli il lustro che meritano.
Sono pur sempre stati con noi, hanno fatto parte dei nostri ricordi per più o meno tempo, e solo per questo io li faccio rivivere.

 

La moda ha sempre guardato all’arte come fonte di ispirazione.
Nell’ultimo piano della Casa della Musica di Grado ci siamo potuti soffermare sulla registrazione della performance creata per l’occasione, che vede danzare come protagonisti assoluti i volumi teatrali e i materiali stratificati dei tuoi abiti.

Che significato ha per te la performance? Qual’è il valore che dà il movimento e il corpo di un altro artista (in questo caso quello dell’attrice e delle danzatrici) all’abito?

E’ stata una cosa molto impattante per me. La performance era una cosa che conoscevo bene. Ma non su me stessa.

Mi sono per la prima volta, sentita in musica e in narrativa, vista in movimenti.

L’effetto, assicuro io, è davvero spiazzante. Mi sono sentita capita, tradotta.
Non so se questo sia il percepito anche dal pubblico, ma quello che io ho sentito era davvero forte.

 

Parlando dell’importanza di abitare l’abito, non ho potuto fare a meno di osservare l’accurata scelta dei modelli nelle fotografie. La collezione Beauty/Not beauty è caratterizzata da una persona particolarmente interessante e speciale …

Mio padre è la mia musa. Fose per il legame fisico che c’è oppure è solo una mia sensazione, ma nessuno come lui capisce e sa portare i miei abiti. Li indossa ma al contempo li contempla, non è solo indossare, da peso al significato che hanno. Sa bene che quegli abiti hanno storie.

 

L’ultima collezione di Romina invece ci allontana per un istante dal mondo luminoso, onirico e soffice, lasciandoci pur sempre nel sogno, dove, assieme ai colori, sentiamo in lontananza sbiadire la canzone Deep Purple di Billy Ward & the Dominoes.

Il tuo sogno nel cassetto?

Prendere un caffè a Parigi con Martin (Margiela ovviamente)

… e i progetti per il futuro?

Sono una Yes Woman, le cose mi capitano quasi al 100% delle volte.

Chissà cosa c’è in serbo in futuro …
Il caso è una cosa che ha sempre riscosso un gran fascino in me, da quando non ne conoscevo il significato , fino agli studi su Duchamp e i suoi tentativi di intrappolarlo… forse lui c’è riuscito, io no.

 

Bellezza, sostenibilità e consapevolezza.

Tre concetti importantissimi nel senso più ampio dei termini incarnano il creare di Romina, collocando alla perfezione il suo lavoro nella contemporaneità degli eventi e dei cambiamenti dell’epoca.

Very young, nonconformist and daring.
After an international course of study, in a short time she conquered the pages of Vogue and Vanity Fair, mixing creativity, recycling, quality, nature and freedom.

 

Romina Dorigo’s clothes, which seem to be real one-of-a-kind pieces, need no further introduction.

Eloquent garments, important creations, old and antique lace and layering, which make me think of a meeting between Velázquez and Margiela.
All embellished with care and sustainability.

 

 

What or who are you inspired by when you create?

The 19th edition of the Maravee Festival has chosen you this year, together with the Slovenian stylist Matea Benedetti to represent Maravee Dress.
 You both interpreted the “concept of dress as an entity that does not just enclose the body, but takes possession of its core, affecting body – mind – society, and the environment, which is addressed in an ecological key through recycling…”

How and why did you approach upcycling (creative reuse as a process of transforming waste materials into quality products and environmental worth) and what was the previous life of the materials you use?

Everything I use has been given to me. On the Vancouver runway I walked my models with a video in the background with the blinks of different people to whom I asked to indicate, precisely with a blink, how long it took them to establish whether something was beautiful or was no longer beautiful.

What I wanted to communicate was the timing of the decision, using as a yardstick the blink of an eye, an instant.
A moment to realise that the piece had no more worth.

The same things that I was putting in front of a paying public who were willing to pay for them just because they looked different or perhaps unrecognisable.
That’s what I try to do every time I work with these donated clothes, take them on a stage and restore to them the lustre they deserve.
They were still with us, they were part of our memories for more or less time, and for that reason alone I make them live again.

 

Fashion has always looked to art as a source of inspiration.
On the top floor of the Casa della Musica in Grado we were able to linger on the recording of the performance created for the occasion, which sees the theatrical volumes and the layered materials of your clothes dancing as the absolute stars.

What does performance mean to you? What added value do the movements and body of another artist (in this case that of the actress and the dancers) give to the dress?

It ‘was a very impactful for me. Performance was something I knew well. But not on myself.

For the first time I felt interpreted in music and fiction, seen in movements.

The effect, I assure you, is truly unsettling. I felt understood, translated.
I don’t know if this was also the perception of the audience, but what I felt was really powerful.

 

Speaking about the importance of living the clothing, I could not help but notice the careful choice of the models in the photographs. The Beauty / Not beauty collection is typified by a particularly interesting and special person …

It’s my father. He’s my muse.
Maybe it’s because of the physical bond that exists between us, or it’s just my feeling, but nobody understands and knows how to wear my clothes in the way he does. He wears them but at the same time he contemplates them, it is not just the wearing, he gives weight to their meaning. He’s aware that the clothes have stories.

 

 

Romina’s latest collection, on the other hand, takes us away for a moment from the bright, dreamlike and soft world, and leaves us still in the dream, where, together with the colours, we hear the song Deep Purple by Billy Ward & the Dominoes fading into the distance.

Your long-cherished dream?

Having a coffee in Paris with Martin (Margiela of course)

And future projects?

I am a Yes Woman, things happen to me almost 100% of the time.

Who knows what’s in store in the future …
Chance is something that has always held great fascination for me, since I didn’t know the meaning of it until my studies of Duchamp and his attempts to trap it … maybe he succeeded, but I haven’t.

 

 

Beauty, sustainability and awareness.

Three very important concepts, in the broadest sense of the terms, embody Romina’s creations, placing her work perfectly in the contemporaneity of events and changes of an era.
