PiattoUnico, Acrobati [ dettaglio / detail ]

PiattoUnico, Seya

Puoi andare nello specifico? A quali particolarità ti riferisci?

***

PiattoUnico has magic in its name.

Unique like the increasingly rare vintage ceramics from which they are made, Unique as in the creative aspect that transforms these minimalist plates into tiny works of art, Unique as the spirit of those behind this small brand capable of transforming an old dish found in a flea market into a marvel of poetry and curiosity.

Behind the project is Emanuela Sala, designer and now a dear friend, who in a single piece is able to find the key to reinterpreting old prints, old figurines, traditional sayings and phrases with a verve and a rare nonchalance.

I got to know Emanuela after reading an article about Mammals Excluded, a collection of dishes dedicated to animals, with illustrations taken from 19th century scientific sources, both pre and post Darwin: birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and invertebrates.

The balance is stunning: the size of the plates, the grace of the drawings, the animals chosen — eating off a dragon or a porcupine fish is not something we do every day — speak of a new collection able to stand on the most conventional table.

A clash that is not easy to obtain – and to maintain – even in the subsequent works and series of tableware: Ipse dixit, ROARR, Sogni. Looking at them all at once, these collections seem suspended in a timelessness made of references, dreamlike details, surreal objects.

A creative process that resonates even more strongly in the “one-off” pieces so that they seem to jump off the plate and turn into actual three-dimensional sculptures, collector’s items each with its own “history, destiny, meaning.”

And here is the point and the wonder of this project, the fact of its being made up of stories which have been searched for and rediscovered on a wave of curiosity, the fascination with vintage items, for graphics that seem to come from Jules Verne deconstructed and re-made with grace, joy for everything that is colour, design, imagination. And then the innate irony capable of placing a woman in a corset on top of a jelly, deconstructed cupids on a pair of cake-stands, a thinker on an Olivetti typewriter. It is the art of collage sublimated and brought to a level of simplicity and formal cleanliness well beyond the norm.

PiattoUnico, Mammiferi esclusi

Here the synthesis of a pleasant chat born after the involvement of PiattoUnico in Maravee Object, the 2019 edition of the homonymous Festival conceived and directed by Sabrina Zannier.

How was the project born?

From the desire to express myself, after years spent giving shape to other people’s sites and products. I have a distinct modesty when it comes to sharing strictly personal feelings and thoughts: the pieces that I make with PiattoUnico help me to communicate in a mediated and “gentle” manner both the small and big things in life that are dear to my heart.

What are the things in life that you care about?

When I think of PiattoUnico I catch a glimpse of a passion for small objects that speak of a craft tradition that in some cases has been weakened or lost. I am thinking of production centres such as Nove for example.

Was the choice of ceramics connected to the desire to preserve a cultural and productive heritage or was it an accident?

I take injustices to heart; or rather I go crazy because of injustices, in particular for those situations in which the weak end up in the grip of a system that has lost the reasonableness, kindness and spirit of the human scale.

Certainly in PiattoUnico there is the desire to work with different people from those I used to encounter when working with companies: anyone who collaborates with artisans knows that they are almost always passionate people, mentally free, frank; sometimes even difficult and elusive, but take it or leave it! I am not an artisan by training, but I have a kindred feeling to their way of understanding work as part of life.

Certainly the decision to work on a very small, completely Italian output, giving a new face to traditional products, is my contribution to the continuation of a world – and a way – to which I feel close. A cultural heritage taken for granted by some and kept on its feet with great difficulty by others, which, once it has disappeared, is irretrievably lost.

The most successful piece?

Technically speaking, there are some unique pieces that are almost perfectly achieved, and using resin the result is always in part unpredictable, perfection comes when it arrives. Moving on to the content, the most successful pieces are those that I really understand only after having made them! In concrete terms, at the technical level of content Tempo, at the level of execution the Braccialetti bowls for example.

An artist with whom to collaborate?

Architects and craftsmen come to mind because with them the transition from saying to doing is as quick as a beat; where artists are concerned I am less prepared … but I think it would be fun to work with performers or with purely visual artists.

Performers and visual artists open the field to emotional involvement, to experience, concepts that today seem to be essential for making and for communicating. Sometimes even in a misused way.

I ask you to take a leap forward. What kind of interaction can you imagine between PiattoUnico and a performer for example?

IF I UNDERSTAND THE QUESTION … ceramics are so flexible as to allow you to translate an idea or enrich it by bringing into play the material element, which still adds meaning and leaves a trace of something which is in itself evanescent. Depending on the project, it’s possible to invent everything. An unforgettable “non-performance” for me was when in India, during a very long train journey, an Indian family offered me tea in a simple terracotta cup, clearly made by hand. After drinking, I held this small cup in my hand like a relic, trying to let it dry and then keep it or who knows, reuse it, but they suggested that I should throw it out of the window: the earth would return to earth (it was not glazed ceramic, therefore there was no dispersal of non-green materials!) and those who produced the cups would have had more work.

It has nothing to do with the question, does it? Hahaha! But come on, it has something to do with our overall conversation 😉

On the contrary, have you ever thought of turning your PiattiUnico into the protagonists of a collective experience where performers become diners grappling with plates with strange, three-dimensional decorations, sometimes invasive to the point of having to use force on a particular plate?

In the end, performative alchemy springs from this, from the interaction between plate – food – diner, don’t you think?

Do you believe that acts of this kind, designed for direct public involvement— regardless of whether its collectors, buyers, the press or anyone else — could be an alternative to trade fairs for a small brand like PiattoUnico??

This has been a very hot topic for some years, and incredibly challenging. On the one hand, everything that revolves around food is on the crest of a wave, I am not referring only to chefs, cooking classes and culinary fashions of all kinds (in Milan soon there will be more bakers than jewellers); there are also very many food-related events, fairs, special dinners, the return of attention to mise en place, new ways to eat dinner and new ways to enjoy food.

I believe that in recent times many wonderful things have been created. I don’t want to say too many, and there’s always a way to invent something different, but there’s really a lot of overcrowding …

In this field I am more interested in design than in performance itself: although I am very fascinated by the idea-project of Con.tatto to make the diners eat directly from the table or with their own hands, I feel more in tune with finding the chef Oldani to perfect the experience that can be had with ad hoc designed plates and cutlery.

In this field I believe that there is still something to do: in the format, also taking inspiration from oriental cookery, but in a real and proper form.

For example, as someone who is gluten intolerant I have to limit my bread-dipping incredibly, in the absence of proper bread. But you know, the sauce that remains on the plate is always one of the tastiest parts … I have been thinking for months of a plate that will allow me to enjoy a dish to the full without having to resort to bread.

There would also be interesting conversations to be had about the plates to be used when undergoing specific dietary regimes or when suffering from eating disorders … if there are any dieticians listening … 😉

PiattoUnico, Incantesimo

I make with PiattoUnico help me to communicate in a mediated and “gentle” manner both the small and big things in life that are dear to my heart

Staying on the theme of exhibitions, events etc, what are the weak points where you believe there is still a lot to be done in order to go beyond the mere press fallout? Important – as we know well – but not always aligned with market responses.

It is not easy for a small brand with a small budget to make itself known, also because one learns and grows simultaneously with the various attempts that one undertakes. Timing is very important and sometimes you can’t get as well-prepared as you should. The most important fairs have a very full offer, and a small brand risks not getting the visibility which it is searching for. I believe that – from the organisational side – we work too little and poorly both before and after the fair: with the internet and the various social media, the events could have a very interesting long afterlife, but instead once the real fair is over everything is turned off … one needs to give more continuity and attachment to one’s own visitor-follower-customers. On the participant side, I always hope to find “partners”, other small brands related to PiattoUnico, with which it would be possible to build a network for a more solid, more visible, more complete offer. A true undertaking!

The eternal struggle between art and design.

More than just a struggle, a quagmire …! The limits between some definitions get thinner and thinner, and sometimes I believe they depend on the context in which the work is put forward and enjoyed, on the sensibility both of the public and of the creative individual.

I often find myself thinking of my objects as if they were songs: songwriters are certainly authors; so artist or designer?

PiattoUnico @ Maravee Object 2019, ph. Valentina Cunja

What is the make-up of your audience?

Collectors for passion, occasional buyers, serial buyers?

I don’t have a 360-degree view since I also sell through stores …. Many of my clients are well-prepared people, who do not choose at random and are able to recognise when a product has content, as well as a form. It could be a collector for the unique pieces, or the lover of home dining who is always careful to take good care of the table. A chef was my advisor and supporter, so I expect to get into some small bistros soon.

Commissioned work.

An opportunity to go beyond one’s comfort zone, a push to discover and explore new avenues. It’s not always easy, but it’s almost always interesting.

I really enjoyed making dishes for Seya, a Korean fashion brand: initially it seemed a very simple shared endeavour, only through working together did there emerge clear differences in the aesthetic approach that are absolutely unforeseen, but fascinating, because behind an apparent levelling of taste there are characteristics that should be nourished instead …

Can you be specific? What characteristics do you mean?

Oh nothing, this second unfinished degree in anthropology often peeps out! We all think we live in a globalized world, we have all travelled and we think that there are no more great mysteries, but I think it is a superficial impression that sometimes becomes counterproductive, because it dampens curiosity and the desire to look deeper. Earlier, for example, I was referring to the concept of beauty, which responds to different standards in different cultures; in the West, for example, symmetry plays an undeniable role in defining what is beautiful; in other countries it goes for nothing. The “rules” of the composition respond to systems of logic that I believe are profoundly different: you should proceed a little tentatively, we can meet halfway, but if you also manage to learn something new you will take home not only a job but also an experience!

A disappointment

I did a considerable amount of work on lost shipments, almost unique pieces shattered during firing, a colour came out differently from how it had been carefully calibrated at the design stage … Or a collection of prints not purchased immediately and lost forever, as recently happened to me, in New Jersey as in the Cormano market.

I try to consider some damage as part of the journey, I’m getting wise 😉
