Lo spazio creativo Arcipèlago è entusiasta di presentare la sua nuova mostra sul tema giocoso dei collage. In questa occasione, gli artisti Giona Maiarelli e Vanda Gemino sono stati invitati a presentare le loro opere più recenti. Allegri o seri, irriverenti o essenziali, i collage selezionati ci spingono ad esplorare le fessure della quotidianità e l’affascinante potere del casuale, dell’inaspettato e del disparato. Questa mostra è l’occasione per viaggiare tra realtà e meraviglia, tra qui e altrove, passato e presente, identificabile e bizzarro, come molti nuovi territori visivi da scavare e decifrare.

 

 

Il 1º gennaio 2016 Giona Maiarelli ha iniziato a creare ogni sera un collage con le pagine del “New York Times”. Un modo per testimoniare un anno che si presentava tumultuoso (Trump aveva già annunciato la sua candidatura alla presidenza). La sfida di lavorare con materiale limitato, lo costringe a guardare con occhi nuovi e una mente aperta. Ventuno collage del “New York Times Art Project” ci immergeranno nella nostra attualità più recente attraverso un caleidoscopio visivo dove si può discernere il profondo rapporto tra i collage e la pratica grafica di Giona.

 

 

Arcipèlago presenterà anche la sua nuova serie “Survey of the American West”. Questi collage sono realizzati con raccolte fotografiche che esplorano il “West” degli Stati Uniti, commissionate dal governo americano a fotografi come Ansel Adams e altri tra la fine dell’800 e la metà del XX secolo. Forme di carta geometriche dipinte a mano dialogano con le immagini fotografiche in bianco e nero di una natura severa e solenne.

 

 

Che si tratti di eventi correnti o di maestosa natura, ciò che lega questi temi è il fascino ambiguo che esercita su di me l’immaginario visivo americano. Per non cadere negli stereotipi, ho voluto utilizzare un’iconografia propria degli Stati Uniti, raccontando l’America con il mio sguardo, quello di uno straniero.

Vanda Gemino crea spille utilizzando giornali, riviste vintage, foto e cartoline degli anni ’40-’60. La sua pratica del collage l’ha portata a lavorare su scala molto piccola. Le sue spille sono finestre sulla sua immaginazione poetica dove frammenti di ricordi, pezzi di vecchi tempi e la sua creatività romantica creano pezzo dopo pezzo un puzzle intrigante e sensibile.

 

 

 

Giona Maiarelli è il direttore creativo di Maiarelli Studio, uno studio di branding e comunicazione con sede a New York. Cresciuto a Udine, Giona ha vissuto a Bologna, Parigi e New York lavorando come art director nell’ambito del design editoriale, pubblicità e branding. Il suo lavoro è stato pubblicato su annuari dedicati alla grafica e riviste internazionali, e ha vinto numerosi premi. È stato nominato Designer of the Year dalla rivista “Interior Design”.

 

 

Vanda Gemino è stata stylist nel settore dell’arredamento per oltre trent’anni.
In questa lunga esperienza lavorativa, la passione e la ricerca di uno stile hanno plasmato e raffinato il suo gusto personale. Da alcuni anni è arrivata al collage, un incredibile universo creativo nelle sue possibilità espressive, lo strumento perfetto per esprimere un mondo visionario che stimola la creatività.

[“What’s Left of the Day”]

Collages by Giona Maiarelli and Vanda Gemino
from November 19^th to December 22^th 2022

 

The creative space Arcipèlago is thrilled to present its new exhibition around the playful theme of collages. On this occasion, artists Giona Maiarelli and Vanda Gemino have been invited to present their most recent artworks. Cheerful or serious, irreverent or essential, the selected collages push us to explore the cracks of everyday life, and the fascinating power of random, unexpected and disparate.
This show is an opportunity to travel between reality and wonder, here and elsewhere, past and present, identifiable and bizarre, as many new visual territories to be excavated and deciphered.

On January 1st, 2016, Giona Maiarelli started to create every evening a collage with the pages of the “New York Times”. A way to witness a year that would be tumultuous (Trump had already announced his candidacy for president). The challenge of working with limited material forces him to look with fresh eyes and an open mind. Twenty-one collages of the “New York Times Art Project” will dive us into our most recent actuality across a visual kaleidoscope where one can discern the deep relationship between the collages and Giona’s graphic design practice.

Arcipèlago will also present Giona’s new series, “Survey of the American West.” These collages are made with photographic images exploring the “West” of the United States, commissioned by the American government to photographers such as Ansel Adams between the late 19th and mid-20th centuries. Hand-painted geometric paper shapes dialogue with black and white photographic images of a severe and solemn nature.

 

Whether it’s current events or majestic nature, what links these themes is the ambiguous charm that exerts on me the American visual imagination. To avoid falling into stereotypes, I wanted to use an iconography typical of the United States, telling America with my gaze, that of a foreigner.

Vanda Gemino creates brooches using newspapers, vintage magazines, photos and postcards from the 40s–60s. Her practice of collage led her to work on a very small scale. Her brooches are windows on her poetic imagination where fragments of memories, pieces of old times and her romantic creativity create piece after piece an intriguing and sensitive puzzle.

Giona Maiarelli is the creative director of Maiarelli Studio, a branding and communication studio based in New York. Growing up in Udine, Giona lived in Bologna, Paris and New York working as art director in the field of editorial design, advertising and branding. His work has been published in annual and international magazine and has won numerous awards. He was named Designer of the Year by “Interior Design” magazine.

Vanda Gemino has been a stylist in the furniture industry for more than thirty years.
In this long working experience, the passion and the search for a style have shaped and refined her personal taste. For some years now she has come to collage, an amazing creative universe in its expressive possibilities, the perfect tool to express a visionary world that stimulates creativity.
